EXILDISCOUNT

Drew alias Exildiscount is a DJ, sound artist, composer and producer from Berlin.

Just as Exildiscount resists prescriptive gender norms, their music defies unambiguous categorisation. Using elements of house, techno, dark disco, new beat and EBM, they create dance music that reflects the fluidity of their non-binary trans* identity. Two years after their 2019 debut "Gift" on REVELLER RECORDS, they are now kicking off their own label UNBOXING SHADOWS with the release of their follow-up EP "Next Big Thing".

Exploring and questioning the boundaries between what’s commonly considered as appealing and what’s “weird” has always been at the heart of Exildiscount’s artistic vision. A new kind of beauty emerges from the superimposition of contrasting elements if we allow ourselves to tune into the interferences. In this sense, a big part of Exildiscount’s work is motivated by a reflection upon current social issues as well as personal topics, such as identity or religious ideology. They also draw inspiration from Berlin’s rich nightlife of which they’ve long been a fixture, working in artist care or as a lighting engineer.

As a DJ, Exildiscount has played all over Berlin’s queer scene, including Chantals House of Shame, House of Red Doors, Gegen and as a long-time resident at SchwuZ. Their style moves mainly within a spectrum between house and techno, with a penchant for subversive elements and driving, syncopated beats. Through their DJ sets, Exildiscount intends to establish a moment of meaningful connection with the audience on the dancefloor, playfully challenging the dancers’ expectations and creating a safe space for them to catch a glimpse of the obscure.

Aside from creating or playing music clearly meant for the dancefloor, Exildiscount has worked as a composer and sound designer with video and performance artists and has also started developing their own sound installations and performance art in 2020.
